Aragon’s Las Vegas-style casino complex, Gran Scala, could wipe out countless bird species.
The habitat of thousands of rare bird species will be endangered if a multi-billion euro tourism venture is allowed to go ahead in Aragon.
When the regional government of Aragon declared its plans to allow the construction of a Las Vegas-style casino complex in Los Monegros, the council failed to mention the impact on the area’s wildlife, which includes some of the most noteworthy bird communities in Europe.
Los Monegros is situated in the central part of the Ebro valley, straddling the provinces of Huesca and Zaragoza.
According to Josele J. Saiz of the Boletas Birdwatching Centre, Los Monegros is frequented by rare species such as Pin Tailed and Black Bellied Sandgrouse, Great Spotted Cuckoo, Great Bustard, Little Bustard, Stone Curlew, Short Toed Lark, Thekla Lark, Calandra Lark and Dupont’s Lark.
The Aragon regional government’s environment department states that it has informed the project’s developers of the location of protected areas, but it has not prohibited construction in these areas, with the focus remaining on the 25 million visitors expected to visit the entertainment centre each year.
The total cost of the scheme, which will create 60,000 new jobs, is estimated at €17 billion over a ten-year period. However, long-term costs to the region’s bird population may be far greater.
